As soon as little Otto started walking, Nicky thought it was time to make some changes in her tiny kitchen to make better use of the space and get it as child-friendly as it could possibly be.First, she de-cluttered her cupboards by taking all the pots and pans out and hanging them up. Then she installed shelves over the window for extra storage and attached her knives to the wall, which both saved space and kept them out of reach of curious hands. This created just enough room for a dishwasher to help with all the extra dirty dishes that magically appear when you have another mouth to feed. Nicky says that the changes have made the kitchen a more enjoyable place to cook, and thanks to the dishwasher she gets to spend more time playing with Otto and less time in rubber gloves.

HATEM’S TINY KITCHEN

Living with a tiny kitchen is a challenge at the best of times but on a boat it’s even harder. In such a little space, everything has to have its place and there’s absolutely no room for any mess. After several years on a barge, Sam and Hatem have this clutter-free lifestyle down to a fine art, and their dishwasher plays a big part in it. As soon as something gets dirty, in it goes, ready to be cleaned and used again. They’ve been smart with their space by installing high shelves for herbs and spices, and most cleverly of all, created a cover that slots over the sink to give them a bit of extra worktop. Just a couple of improvements that have helped to keep both mess and arguments to a minimum.

SUE’S TINY KITCHEN

Sue is an artist who makes up her own rules about size, shape and colour. Her tiny kitchen is her canvas and she fiercely believes that any blank wall is a waste. Her dishwasher is kept busy cleaning plates from the bagel lunches she hosts for her friends, but it wasn’t easy to make room for it – especially with all the fabulous things she has collected and created over the years. She hangs pots, pans and mugs over the cooker so that they’re easy to reach and don’t crowd her cupboards. A small roll cart in the middle of her kitchen floor gives her another place to stack bowls, and instead of hiding plates away, she shows them off in a wall rack to keep her kitchen bright and bold. Just the way she likes things.

TOM’S TINY KITCHEN

There’s rarely a quiet moment in Tom’s home because his family and friends often come to stay in his small but stylish apartment. Cooking for lots of people in a tiny space isn’t easy and cleaning up after them is even harder, so Tom decided to make some changes to his kitchen. He started by donating things he didn’t need like a barely-used bread maker and a long-forgotten fondue set. Then he installed double cupboards and put a rail over his sink to hang pots and pans instead of cramming them into cabinets and drawers. He even found that he had enough room for a dishwasher, which has made the visits much more relaxing and nowhere near as messy.

MEL’S TINY KITCHEN

When you’ve got teenagers at home, the two most important things are a full fridge and a dishwasher. Or so says Mel, who recently gave her tiny kitchen a much-needed modern makeover. Along with the jazzy floor, she squeezed a pull-out pantry into the awkward gap next to her oven and left plenty of space on top of her units to hide rarely-used appliances away. Mel also chose dazzling yellow cupboards to brighten up the place, which somehow help to make the room feel much bigger than it really is. By replacing one cupboard with a built-in dishwasher, her kitchen became as functional to use as it is fun to look at. If only the kids would try loading it once in awhile.

LUCY AND KEVIN’S TINY KITCHEN

Lucy and Kevin’s tiny kitchen has always been the heart of their home. It’s where everything happens, from cooking and mealtimes to homework and games, so it can get messy from time to time. But as the kids got bigger, they knew the kitchen would have to change. It was Kevin’s idea to extend under the stairs. He realized that there was just enough space for a single sink and that if they thought about it really carefully, they’d be able to squeeze in a dishwasher too. So they mounted extra drawers to keep odds and ends, installed a little corner cupboard and even turned an odd-sized space into a built-in wine rack. Low and behold, the dishwasher fitted so now the kitchen should stay clean and tidy.
